Manchester University
Education & Social Sciences
When designing its communication studies program, Manchester University wanted to ensure that it addresses all the topics that students needed to study. That is why it features courses that allow you to work in small groups and gain experience as both a leader and a follower. Though this is not a cohort program, you’ll find that you take courses with many of the same students in your later years. Other courses in the communication studies arena focus on television and film production, broadcasting and advertising to help you gain the skills needed to work in any area of the communications industry.
Communication Studies
Manchester University is home to a branch of the National Communication Association Student Club, which gives you the chance to meet with students in the program, work on projects together and attend local, regional and national events. Marian University
College of Arts and Sciences
Located in Indianapolis, which is the heart of the state, Marian University makes it easy for students to find internships and work study programs away from the campus and in this major city. You might spend a semester working for a major advertising firm that handles national campaigns or for a health care organization that wants to launch a new disease awareness campaign. Oakland City University
School of Arts and Sciences
As a communications major at Oakland City University, you’ll have the chance to take courses from a wide range of departments and disciplines. The university hopes that this will make you a more well-rounded student and that you’ll have a better understanding of subjects that will help you land a job after you graduate. This program only requires that you take 48 credits of communication courses. All remaining credits will come from your electives and required general education classes as well as the concentration that you choose. OCU offers five concentrations for communications majors, including health and journalism.
Communications

Purdue University – Calumet Campus
Department of Communication & Creative Arts
Purdue University – Calumet Campus is a branch of the Purdue University school system. Also called Purdue University Northwest because of its location in the northwest region of the state, it has a physical address in Hammond and goes by the name PUNW. The communication program that it offers is available through the PUNW Department of Communication & Creative Arts and encourages students to express their creative sides. You can sign up to work for the newspaper, take creative writing classes and art courses, volunteer to help out with the university’s radio station or join a club.
Bachelor of Arts in Communication
To get your Bachelor of Arts in Communication from PUNW, you’ll need to take at least 120 credits of classes. Like other Bachelor’s in Communications programs in Indiana, this program requires that you take some general education courses in addition to your communication classes. The core group of five classes that all students will take include principles of persuasion, media and society, critical perspectives on communications, communication theory and research and communication and emerging technologies. Purdue University – Main Campus
Undergraduate Programs
In addition to PUNW and other campuses that it operates with Indiana University around the state, Purdue University also has a main campus in West Lafayette. This is the oldest campus in the system and the largest one as well. It has a strong reputation and routinely ranks as one of the top colleges in the country, according to groups and organizations like U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review and Washington Monthly. Some of its degree programs have high rankings too, especially those in engineering, computer science and other technical fields. General Communication, BA
When looking at and comparing degree programs, you’ll want to start with the university’s general communication program. It’s available as a three-year program that requires you take two semesters of courses over the summer and as a traditional four-year degree program. All students must take classes on principles of persuasion, critical perspectives on communications and introduction to communication theory before entering the communications core. You’ll also take classes on specific fields or areas of communications, including fundamentals of speech communication and quantitative methods for communication research. Purdue requires that students maintain a 2.5 GPA too.
Corporate Communication, BA
Purdue offers a degree in corporate communication that it designed for students who want to work in the business industry. This program deals with the ways in which people spread information, lead groups and help each other. You will need to complete the communication core and also take one or more classes from different disciplines that include communication skills and strategies in the workplace, organizing processes and systems, global and social change and contemporary topics in organizations and corporations. Some of those classes include small group communication, approaches to the study of interpersonal communication, conflict and negotiation and principles of persuasion.
Mass Communication, BA
The journalism industry constantly changes, and this mass communication program teaches you how to stay on top of those changes. It includes a number of courses on writing for new forms of media that help you learn how to write articles and reports that people will read or watch online. The mass communication core, which is worth 12 credits, features classes like communication and emerging technologies, theories of mass communication, history of the mass media and mass communication and society. You can also take electives on news magazine production, mass communication ethics, mass communication law and advanced digital video production.
Public Relations and Strategic Communication, BA
Enrolling in the university’s public relations and strategic communication degree program will prepare you for working on political campaigns and advertising campaigns. It can also help you work in the field of image repair, which gives you the chance to help professionals restore their public reputations. Introduction to public relations and introduction to advertising are both part of the core, but this core also features classes on public speaking and interpersonal communications. Agricultural Communication, BS
One of the more unique programs that Purdue offers is an agricultural communication program. This is a combined program that requires you take some classes from the College of Agriculture. It features both a seminar as well as a capstone seminar. Though both require that you do a research paper, the capstone class requires that you do more independent research before writing a paper. This program includes other classes as well as some general education courses. Communication courses that are available include agricultural publishing, critical perspectives on communications, copy editing, writing for the mass media and fundamentals of speech communications.
