The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Public Communications enables students to gain a solid understanding of the principles and laws of freedom and press for the country. Students learn about the range of systems of freedom of expression around the world and the history and role of professionals and entities in shaping communications. They also gain an understanding of forms of diversity as related to mass communications, such as gender, race, and ethnicity. The program requires the completion of a total of 120 credits, including general education, core courses, electives, and concentration area classes. The core major courses include reporting and writing news, media literacy, first amendment and media ethic, and writing and producing media. Students have the ability to concentrate on one of two areas, either strategic communications and journalism and digital media. Students must also complete interactive capstone requirements, including communications and media research and capstone seminar. Practicums, internships and independent study are also required for completion of the degree.

The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the largest of the colleges and schools at the university.
